President Tinubu Mourns Passing of Awo’s Grandson, Segun Awolowo
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow at the death of Olusegun “Segun” Awolowo
Jr., grandson of the late Nigerian statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo, describing his passing as a “tragic
loss” for both the Awolowo family and the country.
In a statement, Tinubu praised Segun for embodying the “Awolowo pedigree” — in his character,
integrity, and dedication to public service. He highlighted Segun’s long and distinguished career,
particularly his tenure as Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), where he
served from 2013 to 2021, making him the agency’s longest-serving executive director.
“Segun exemplified the Awolowo pedigree in appearance, character and demeanour. Like his
grandfather, he was a lawyer committed to defending truth and justice,” Tinubu’s message read.
The President extended his condolences to Segun’s immediate family, his wife, children, and mother —
as well as the wider Awolowo family. He also sympathised with the people of Ogun State, the South-
West geopolitical zone, and all Nigerians who admired Segun’s work and legacy.
Segun Awolowo died at the age of 62. In their own tribute, the Awolowo family described him as
“steady, wise, endlessly loving, and the constant anchor” of their lives, noting his lifelong commitment
to Nigeria through public service.
