Fernandinho Officially Retires from Football at Age 40
Fernandinho, the decorated Brazilian midfielder known for his time at Manchester City and Shakhtar
Donetsk, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40.
The 40-year-old made the decision during a charity match at Arena da Baixada, the stadium of Athletico
Paranaense, the club where he began his professional career. In his remarks, Fernandinho said:
“There’s nothing in football that motivates me anymore. I’ve achieved everything I could. Now, it’s time
to enjoy time with my family.”
He explained that even running for just 30 minutes during the match left him “already tired,” signaling
that his body could no longer keep up with the demands of high-level play.
Over a career spanning more than two decades, Fernandinho collected an impressive trophy haul:
- Shakhtar Donetsk: Six Ukrainian league titles and a UEFA Cup.
- Manchester City: Five Premier League titles, six EFL Cups, an FA Cup, and a Community Shield across
nine seasons. - Brazil National Team: 53 caps and a Copa America win in 2019.
Fernandinho returned to Brazil in 2022, rejoining Athletico Paranaense, the club where he launched his career. He last played for them in December 2024.
What comes after retirement remains open. According to reports, Fernandinho is being linked with
potential coaching roles or ambassadorial duties, especially given his deep tactical understanding and
leadership qualities. However, for now, he says his priority is simpler: “time to enjoy my family.”
