Cristiano Ronaldo Cleared to Play in Portugal’s World Cup Opener
Cristiano Ronaldo will be available for Portugal’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to reports from Portuguese sports outlet Record.
The Portugal captain had previously received a one-match suspension following disciplinary action in a
qualifier. However, Record reports that Ronaldo already served the suspension during Portugal’s recent
match against Armenia, making him eligible to play in the tournament opener.
Ronaldo had been handed a one-match ban after an incident in a qualifier.
Some media outlets initially suggested he might miss Portugal’s first World Cup game, causing confusion
among fans.
The clarification confirms that Ronaldo can lead Portugal on the field for their first World Cup fixture.
With Ronaldo cleared, Portugal’s manager can deploy their captain and all-time top scorer for the high-
profile opener. His presence is expected to boost team morale and provide leadership for younger
players as Portugal aims for a strong start in the 2026 tournament.
