President Tinubu Allocates ₦1.01 Trillion to INEC in 2026 Budget Ahead of 2027 General Elections
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has proposed a historic ₦1.013 trillion allocation to the Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the 2026 Appropriation Bill, positioning it among the largest
single budgetary provisions for the electoral body ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The allocation is contained in the 2026 Appropriation Bill, which Tinubu presented to the National
Assembly as part of the “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity” with a
total expenditure framework of ₦58.18 trillion.
At over ₦1.01 trillion, the INEC provision marks a significant increase compared with prior funding levels
and underscores the federal government’s emphasis on adequate financing for the electoral process.
Analysts say such a boost aims to ensure that the commission is equipped to meet logistical demands,
including procurement of technology, voter education, nationwide deployment of staff, and other
operational costs associated with conducting large-scale elections in Africa’s most populous democracy.
Section 3(3) of the Electoral Act 2022 requires that funds earmarked for general elections be released to
the commission at least one year before the polls, and the early inclusion of the sizable allocation in the
budget aligns with this legal provision as Nigeria prepares for elections scheduled for February and
March 2027.
INEC’s spending necessities have risen over successive election cycles. In 2015, the commission spent
about ₦108.8 billion, and in 2019 it received around ₦143 billion.
The 2023 elections saw ₦313.4 billion released from an approved ₦355 billion for conduct and
operations.
Observers say the ₦1.01 trillion allocation reflects both inflationary pressures and the scale of
preparations required for the impending polls, including enhancements in electoral technology and staff
training to improve credibility, transparency and voter confidence.
The 2026 budget which also allocates funds to other priority sectors such as security, infrastructure,
education, health, and internal governance agencies now awaits detailed scrutiny and approval by the
joint session of the National Assembly.
As Nigeria marches toward the 2027 general elections, the enhanced funding for INEC signals the federal government’s official commitment to bolstering the capacity of the electoral umpire ahead of a
