Fayose Links Darkness After 7pm to Higher Birth Rates
Newly inaugurated Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Ayodele Fayose, has attributed
part of Nigeria’s population growth to inadequate electricity supply, particularly in rural areas, saying
the absence of power after 7pm leaves residents with limited recreational options and leads them to
retire early.
Fayose, the former Ekiti State governor, made the remarks on Friday, August 7, 2026, in Abuja following
his inauguration as REA board chairman by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe. A video clip of the
comments was widely shared by Arise News on Saturday.
He argued that communities without reliable electricity become inactive after sunset. “Why you don’t
address this issue of electricity? The people at that level have no alternative attraction. Nothing else
matters to them. After 7 o’clock, it gets dark there,” Fayose said.
According to him, the lack of nightlife and other forms of entertainment encourages people to stay
indoors. “Everybody is engaging their wives. And the population simply becomes double. The simple
problem is because there is a lack of electricity,” he stated.
Fayose added that residents often prepare mentally for an early night because of the limited options.
“People go to bed early. Their mind is simply prepared that, well, if this is the only available recreation,
let me remain here. But when we address this electricity, there will be nightlife. There will be recreation
outside your wife,” he said.
The former governor emphasised that expanding electricity access would not only support economic
activity but also change social patterns by enabling evening activities beyond the home.
He assumed the REA role with a pledge to advance rural electrification efforts under the Federal
Government’s Renewed Hope agenda, noting that many power-sector challenges are concentrated at
the grassroots.
The comments, captured in a conversation with Arise News, sparked widespread discussion online.
Fayose’s remarks form part of broader observations on the social effects of Nigeria’s longstanding
electricity shortages, especially in underserved rural communities where power access remains limited.
