David Mark Urges ECOWAS to Caution FG, INEC Against Actions Risking 2027 Poll Crisis

The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has called on the
Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to warn the Federal Government and the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against any steps that could plunge Nigeria into crisis
ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mark made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja while receiving an ECOWAS delegation on a pre-election
fact-finding mission. He stressed that credible elections in Nigeria are essential for peace and stability
across the West African region.

In a statement issued by ADC National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party expressed
concerns over INEC’s level of preparedness, alleged government influence over state institutions
including the judiciary, and threats of violence attributed to the ruling party.

Mark said free, fair and transparent elections remain the best way to prevent electoral violence and
conflict.

“The best way to prevent conflict, especially in relation to elections, is to ensure that it is free, fair and
transparent,” he stated.

He urged ECOWAS to join the ADC in insisting on a credible electoral process now.

“We in the ADC have committed ourselves to the highest standards of peaceful conduct before, during
and after the elections. But we need ECOWAS to join us in insisting on a credible election now.

“This is why you must tell the Federal Government and the INEC that they must not do anything that
could plunge Nigeria into needless crisis. This must form a part of your early warning signals,” Mark said.

He noted that the ECOWAS mission was operating under the organisation’s Conflict Prevention
Framework and emphasised the shared interest in a peaceful and stable Nigeria and West Africa.
