Man Arrested Over Alleged Attempt to Smuggle Indian Hemp Into Kano Prison

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, says it has foiled an attempt to smuggle suspected Indian hemp into the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kurmawa, Kano.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Kofarnassarawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Kano.

Kofarnassarawa said the incident occurred around noon on Sunday when a 40-year-old man allegedly attempted to throw a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the custodial facility.

He said officers of the Armed Squad Unit apprehended the suspect, a resident of Janguza Quarters, following their vigilance and prompt response.

The officers were acting under the supervision of the unit’s commander, CSC Usman M. Sale.

The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, commended the officers for their alertness and professionalism, reiterating the command’s zero-tolerance policy on smuggling prohibited items into custodial centres.

He also urged members of the public to refrain from attempting to introduce illicit substances or other prohibited materials into correctional facilities.

According to the statement, the suspect has been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary action.

Yusuf-Lakpene reaffirmed the command’s commitment to strengthening security across its custodial centres to support the safe reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.

In a similar incident in August 2026, a woman was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State, reportedly for her son, who was on death row.
