Football World Mourns Tenerife Striker Jesús de Miguel After Tragic On-Pitch Collision
The football world is in mourning following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel Alameda, who passed away at the age of 30 after suffering a serious injury during a Spanish second-division match.
De Miguel died in hospital on Tuesday morning after colliding with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Segunda División fixture on Monday, 2 November.
The incident occurred in the seventh minute of stoppage time with the score level at 2-2. Owono rushed out of his area to clear a long ball and collided heavily with the Tenerife forward.
Owono was shown a straight red card, and the match was abandoned.
Medical staff treated De Miguel on the pitch for more than five minutes before he was taken by ambulance to hospital.
Spanish media reported that he suffered a cardiac arrest en route and was resuscitated by paramedics. His condition was initially described as stable but serious.
However, it deteriorated overnight, and Tenerife confirmed his death at approximately 08:00 local time on Tuesday.
In a statement, CD Tenerife said: “Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing of Jesús de Miguel Alameda.”
“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness.”
“We stand alongside his devastated family, alongside his loved ones, alongside all of the tinerfeñismo that today weeps for this cruel outcome.”
Police in Spain have opened an investigation into the death, which under Spanish law is standard for any non-natural fatality.
The Spanish football federation postponed Copa del Rey matches scheduled for the following days, and UEFA announced that all its matches this week would include a moment of silence in tribute.
Tributes poured in from across the football community. Real Madrid, Barcelona, LaLiga and the Spanish players’ union expressed condolences.
Former Barcelona defender and Andorra co-owner Gerard Piqué wrote: “I am so deeply sorry. Rest in peace, Jesús.”
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé posted: “Much sadness, there are no words.”
Lionel Messi said: “There are no words. My condolences and lots of strength to all his family and friends.”
Born in Madrid on 21 September 1996, De Miguel built his career through Spain’s lower divisions, featuring for clubs including Navalcarnero, Unionistas and Castellón, where he scored 16 goals in the 2023-24 season to help secure promotion.
He joined Tenerife in 2025 and contributed to their promotion to the Segunda División.
