Australia Urges Citizens to Leave Iran Amid Violent Protests

The Australian government has issued an urgent advisory telling Australian citizens in Iran to depart the
country as soon as possible due to ongoing violent nationwide protests and a volatile security situation,
authorities said Wednesday.
The updated travel advice comes amid widespread civil unrest and concerns that the situation could
escalate without notice.

In its updated warning, Canberra said: “Do not travel to Iran. If you’re in Iran, you should leave as soon
as possible.” The government cited violent protests that may further escalate without notice and
warned that Australians, including dual nationals are at high risk of arrest or detention, and security
conditions are unstable.
Australia’s travel advisory also urged citizens to avoid large public gatherings, demonstrations, and
protests and to follow the instructions of local authorities.
The Australian Embassy’s operations in Tehran remain suspended, limiting on-the-ground consular
support.

The protests in Iran, triggered in part by economic hardship, rising living costs, and long-standing
political grievances, have spread across several cities, with reports of clashes between demonstrators
and security forces.
In several regions, authorities have used force to disperse crowds, contributing to concerns about
civilian safety and international travel hazards.

Australia is not alone in issuing travel updates. Other nations, including India, have advised their citizens
to avoid non-essential travel to Iran and exercise caution if remaining in the country, reflecting a
broader pattern of diplomatic advisories amid the unrest.

The Australian government’s advisory underscores the deteriorating security environment in Iran and is
aimed at reducing risk for Australian nationals until conditions stabilise.
Authorities have emphasised that individuals who choose to remain in Iran despite the advisory will be
responsible for their own safety.
