FIFA Sanctions South Africa For Fielding Ineligible Player Against Lesotho

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has imposed a major sanction on
South Africa’s national football team, docking them three points and three goals after fielding an
ineligible player in their recent World Cup qualifying match against Lesotho.

According to FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, the sanction follows a breach of player eligibility
regulations in the match, which originally ended in South Africa’s favor. The decision not only
strips Bafana Bafana of the points gained but also overturns the result in Lesotho’s favor with a
3–0 walkover victory.

The ruling, announced on Friday, September 27, 2025, has dealt a serious blow to South Africa’s
hopes of advancing in the qualifiers. With the adjustment, Lesotho moves up in the group
standings while South Africa slips back, increasing the pressure on their remaining fixtures.

FIFA emphasized that the regulations governing player eligibility are strict to ensure fairness and
integrity in global football competitions. Any team found guilty of fielding players who fail to
meet eligibility requirements automatically forfeits the match in question, in line with established
statutes.
Officials of the South African Football Association (SAFA) have yet to release a detailed
statement but are expected to appeal the decision in the coming days. Sports analysts note that
while appeals are possible, such cases rarely succeed, as FIFA has consistently upheld similar
sanctions in past instances involving other countries.

The incident has sparked frustration among South African fans, many of whom fear the ruling
could derail the team’s momentum and qualification prospects. For Lesotho, however, the
decision is being celebrated as a historic boost in their campaign, offering them renewed hope in
the race for a World Cup spot.

As the qualifiers continue, FIFA has reminded all participating federations to conduct thorough
checks on player eligibility to avoid costly mistakes that can alter the course of competitions.
