Governor Makinde Rewards Falconets with $15,000 for World Cup Feat

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has rewarded Nigeria’s Under-20 women’s football team, the Falconets, with a sum of $15,000 following their impressive performance at the recently concluded FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The governor announced the reward when he hosted the players and officials at the Government
House in Ibadan on Saturday. Makinde commended the Falconets for their dedication, resilience,
and the pride they brought to Nigeria on the global stage.
“You have proven once again that Nigerian women can compete at the highest level in world
football. Your hard work and commitment deserve recognition, and we are proud of you,”
Makinde said while handing over the cash prize.

The Falconets, who advanced to the latter stages of the tournament and earned global praise for
their flair and fighting spirit, have been celebrated nationwide as symbols of determination and
excellence.

Team officials expressed gratitude to the governor for his gesture, noting that such recognition
not only rewards past efforts but also motivates the players to aim higher in future competitions.
Sports analysts believe Makinde’s support reflects a growing recognition of women’s football in
Nigeria, where the Super Falcons and youth teams continue to raise the country’s profile
internationally.

With this reward, the Falconets join a growing list of Nigerian athletes receiving tangible
encouragement from state governments and private stakeholders for their achievements on the
