Kogi Governor Approves ₦300,000 Monthly Allowance For Medical Doctors

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has approved the payment of ₦300,000 as
monthly allowance for medical doctors in the state, in a move aimed at boosting healthcare
delivery and addressing the challenge of brain drain in the sector.
The governor’s approval, announced on Saturday in Lokoja, follows weeks of consultations with
health stakeholders and is part of the administration’s broader reforms to strengthen the state’s
health system.

According to the statement, the allowance is expected to serve as an incentive to retain medical
professionals within the state, curb the migration of doctors to other states or countries, and
motivate them to deliver quality service to residents.
Governor Ododo noted that healthcare remains a top priority of his administration, stressing that
“no society can thrive without a strong and functional health system.” He assured that the
government will continue to create a conducive working environment for health workers, while
also improving facilities across hospitals in Kogi State.

The development has been widely welcomed by medical associations and practitioners, who
described the governor’s gesture as a timely intervention in the face of rising living costs and the
exodus of health workers.

Observers note that the policy could position Kogi State as one of the more attractive
destinations for medical professionals in Nigeria, while also setting a precedent for other states to
adopt measures that prioritize healthcare workers’ welfare.
With this move, the Ododo administration hopes to strengthen its campaign against medical staff
shortages and ensure that residents of Kogi have greater access to reliable and efficient
healthcare services.
