LP Senate Caucus Slams Governor Okpebholo’s Comments Over Peter Obi’s Safety

The Labour Party (LP) Senate Caucus has expressed deep concern over a reported threat by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, against Mr. Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Governor of Anambra State.
Governor Okpebholo had reportedly declared that Mr. Obi’s security would no longer be guaranteed should he visit Edo State again without first seeking the Governor’s permission.

The threat appears to stem from Mr. Obi’s recent visit to Edo State, where he generously donated ₦15 million to a nursing school.
The statement, which was jointly signed by Senators Dr. Victor Umeh, Ireti Kingibe, Ezea Okey, and Dr. Tony Nwoye, condemned the remarks as not only unbecoming of a sitting Governor but a direct violation of the constitutional rights of a Nigerian citizen.
The statement cited Section 41(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which affirms that all Nigerians have the constitutional right to move freely within the country, adding that no elected or appointed public official has the power to violate this basic right.
“Mr. Peter Obi, a respected Nigerian citizen, has consistently demonstrated a commitment to democratic values, good governance, and national development.
“His visits to any part of Nigeria, including Edo State, are entirely within his constitutional rights and should not be met with hostility or political intimidation.”

The Caucus called on Governor Okpebholo to immediately retract his reckless and unconstitutional statement and tender an unreserved public apology to Mr. Peter Obi and to the Nigerian people, whose collective values of unity and peace he has affronted.
The statement further called on the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the DSS to take this threat seriously, carry out a thorough investigation, and take necessary steps to protect Mr. Obi, in line with the rights guaranteed to every Nigerian citizen.
“Nigeria must not be allowed to descend into anarchy or lawlessness fueled by executive arrogance. The peace, unity, and democratic progress of our dear country must be protected at all costs.”
