Makinde Visits Oyo Park Killing Site, Announces Scholarship For Each Family

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Friday visited Oloka Village in the Oriire Local Government Area of
Oyo State to assess the scene of a deadly attack on the Old Oyo National Parkthat claimed the lives of
five forest guards.
The incident, which occurred earlier this month, was attributed to suspected cross-border bandits,
according to state authorities.

During the on-the-spot assessment, Governor Makinde announced a compensation package of ₦5
million for each family of the slain park personnel.
He also approved scholarships up to the university level for the children of the deceased guards,
underscoring the state government’s commitment to supporting affected families.
Makinde said the visit was intended to better understand the security and infrastructural challenges in
the area.

As part of the state’s intervention, he disclosed plans to rehabilitate the road linking Oloka to Ikoyi-Ile
under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), improve telecommunication
services, install boreholes and solar-powered streetlights, and strengthen joint security operations to
enhance community safety.

The governor also pledged to write to military authorities in Abuja to request the establishment of a
military base in Oloka to further reinforce security in the region.
He emphasised that community cooperation with security agencies is crucial, urging residents to
promptly share information about suspicious activities.

At the site, Makinde led residents and officials in a moment of silence in honour of the fallen forest
guards, commiserating with their families and expressing sympathy for their loss.
Security agencies in the state have responded with intelligence-led operations following the attack, and
authorities continue to pursue the apprehension and investigation of those responsible for the assault.
