Nigeria Begins Crackdown On Foreign Nationals Over Visa Overstays

Nigeria’s immigration authorities have announced the commencement of a nationwide
enforcement exercise targeting foreign nationals who have overstayed their visas or breached
entry conditions. The move, which takes effect today, coincides with the country’s 65th
Independence Anniversary.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) said the operation will be carried out across airports,
land borders, and within communities, ensuring that all foreign visitors comply with the terms of
their stay. According to officials, the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen border
management and protect national security.
Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, emphasized that Nigeria welcomes foreign
investment and tourism but will not tolerate abuses of its immigration system. “Every nation has
the right to regulate entry and stay of foreigners. Those who violate these rules must face the
consequences,” she stated.
The enforcement will involve checks on travel documents, residence permits, and work
authorizations. Foreign nationals found in violation could face penalties ranging from fines and
deportation to being barred from re-entering the country.
Analysts say the timing of the announcement reflects the government’s broader focus on law
enforcement, national sovereignty, and aligning immigration policies with global best practices.
Neighboring countries, including Ghana and South Africa, have implemented similar
clampdowns in recent years.

While civil society groups have urged authorities to carry out the exercise with fairness and
transparency, business leaders are hopeful that strict enforcement will help curb illegal activities
and create a level playing field for law-abiding investors and expatriates.
For now, the NIS is advising all foreign nationals in Nigeria to ensure their documents are up to
date and to regularize their stay where necessary.
