Oluremi Tinubu Condemns Assault Of Women, Girls At Ozoro Festival
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has strongly condemned the assault of women and girls during the
Alue-Do Festival in Ozoro, Delta State, describing the incidents as horrific and unacceptable.
In a statement issued on Sunday, March 22, 2026, she reacted to viral videos showing women being
chased, stripped, and sexually assaulted during the festival held in Isoko North Local Government Area.
Tinubu said she was deeply disturbed by the footage, which she described as “horrific” and “barbaric,”
stressing that no cultural practice or tradition should justify the violation of women’s dignity and rights.
“While I respect our rich cultural heritage, no custom grants any man the right to violate the dignity or
freedom of any woman or girl,” she stated.
The First Lady commended the Nigeria Police Force for the arrests already made in connection with the
incident and urged authorities to ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice.
She also called on victims to seek medical and psychological support, offering prayers for their healing
and recovery following the traumatic experience.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, March 19, 2026, sparked nationwide outrage, with reports
indicating that criminal elements exploited the festival to carry out acts of sexual violence.
Tinubu’s reaction adds to growing calls from government officials, civil society groups, and the public for
accountability and stronger measures to protect women during public events and cultural gatherings.
