Open Grazing Not Banned, Gradual Transition to Ranching Underway, FG Clarifies

The Federal Government of Nigeria has clarified that open grazing has not been banned nationwide,
countering circulating reports suggesting otherwise. The announcement was made by the Ministry of
Livestock Development on Tuesday.

Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, emphasized that the government is
implementing a gradual transition from open grazing to modern ranching systems. The policy aims to
create a structured and sustainable livestock ecosystem, reduce farmers-herders conflicts, and improve
productivity.

Nigeria currently has 273 gazetted grazing reserves, covering over 4.5 million hectares.
The Federal Government is working with state governments to revitalize and equip these reserves,
making them suitable for pastoralists and other livestock operators.

The ministry clarified that the move does not abolish open grazing overnight. Instead, it provides
structured alternatives, encouraging livestock operators to adopt ranching methods gradually while
ensuring their livelihoods are protected.
The Ministry urged the public to rely on official channels for accurate information and disregard
misleading media reports about nationwide bans on open grazing.
“Our goal is to modernize livestock management while supporting pastoralists and ensuring peaceful
coexistence with farmers,” the ministry said.

  1. Alright mates, gave q88bets a go and had a decent time. Game selection’s not bad, and the site runs smoothly enough. Could use a bit more variety in the promos, but overall, a solid shout for a punt. Check ’em out here q88bets.
