Tinubu Appoints Tunji Disu As Acting Inspector General of Police
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police
following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
The appointment was announced on February 24, 2026, in a statement issued by the presidency
through Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, Egbetokun stepped down from his position citing “pressing family
considerations,” bringing an end to his tenure which began in June 2023.
Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police prior to his elevation, was directed to assume office
immediately in an acting capacity. The presidency noted that his appointment is in line with existing
legal provisions governing leadership succession in the Nigeria Police Force.
The government also indicated that the appointment remains subject to formal procedures. President
Tinubu is expected to convene the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s nomination for substantive
appointment, after which his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
Describing the new police chief, the presidency highlighted Disu’s operational experience and leadership
track record, expressing confidence in his ability to steer the force during a period marked by ongoing
security challenges across the country.
Before his appointment, Disu had served in several strategic roles within the police, including as head of
the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) annex in Lagos and as commander of key tactical
units, earning recognition for his approach to modern and community-focused policing.
The leadership transition comes amid broader efforts by the federal government to strengthen internal
security, improve institutional capacity, and enhance public trust in law enforcement.
