Tuggar Resigns As Foreign Affairs Minister Ahead Of 2027 Elections
Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar has resigned as Minister of Foreign Affairs to pursue the
governorship of Bauchi State in the 2027 elections.
The resignation was officially confirmed on Monday, March 30, 2026. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
through its spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, issued a brief statement: “The resignation of the Honourable
Minister of Foreign Affairs is confirmed.” Tuggar’s spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, also announced
the development.
Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shortly after noon on Monday.
The move complies with the President’s directive that all political appointees intending to contest
elective positions in the 2027 general elections must resign on or before March 31, 2026.
Sources close to the former minister indicated that he intends to contest the Bauchi State governorship
under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tuggar, a career diplomat and former Ambassador to Germany, was appointed Minister of Foreign
Affairs in August 2023. His resignation marks the first major cabinet exit in response to the President’s
directive.
