US Congresswoman Sara Jacobs Slams Trump’s Military Threat on Nigeria as “Reckless”

U.S. Congresswoman Sara Jacobs, a Democrat from California’s 51st District and ranking member of the
House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Africa Subcommittee, has sharply condemned former President
Donald Trump’s threat of military intervention in Nigeria, calling it “reckless” and legally baseless.

At a congressional hearing, Jacobs warned that framing Nigeria’s violence purely as a religious conflict
distorts the country’s complex security challenges. She pointed out that Christians and Muslims in
Nigeria are both being targeted by terror groups and bandits.
She argued that any unilateral military action without Nigeria’s consent would violate international law.
According to her, Congress has not authorized force to “protect Christians” in Nigeria.

Jacobs also raised concern that Trump’s rhetoric could inflame sectarian tensions. “We are already
receiving reports of increased strains between Christian and Muslim populations,” she said.
Instead of military intervention, Jacobs urged the U.S. to rely on diplomacy, intelligence cooperation,
and aid programs. She called for more investment in conflict-prevention initiatives and institutional
reform in Nigeria rather than threatening force.

Her comments align with those of Rep. Gregory Meeks, another senior Democrat, who jointly criticized
Trump’s move as ignoring the real drivers of violence, such as land disputes and resource competition.
