Former Liverpool Star Divock Origi Retires from Football at 31
Divock Origi, the Belgian striker who became a cult hero at Liverpool for his clutch performances in
major matches, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31.
Origi made the announcement on Monday, June 8, 2026, through a heartfelt essay published onThe
Players’ Tribune and a statement shared across his social media channels.
In his emotional farewell, Origi wrote: “My purpose in the game as a player is fulfilled. I lived out my childhood dreams: to play on the biggest stages and win the biggest trophies.”
He added: “The mission is complete. Now I step into my next calling. More of the journey to come. With love, Divock Origi.”
Origi reflected on his journey with gratitude and no regrets, mentioning his plans to explore interests in
fashion, business, and philanthropy after football.
Born in Belgium to Kenyan parents, Origi joined Liverpool from Lille in 2014. Over eight seasons at
Anfield (2014–2022), he made 175 appearances and scored 41 goals.
He became immortalised among Liverpool fans for iconic moments, including:
* The dramatic 96th-minute winner against Everton in the Merseyside derby.
* The stunning volley against Barcelona in the 2019 Champions League semi-final.
* The opening goal in the 2019 Champions League final against Tottenham.
He was part of Jürgen Klopp’s squad that won the 2019 UEFA Champions League, the 2019 FIFA Club
World Cup, the 2020 Premier League title, and the 2022 FA Cup and League Cup.
After leaving Liverpool, Origi joined AC Milan in 2022 but struggled for game time, making just 36
appearances and scoring 2 goals.
He had a loan spell at Nottingham Forest in 2023–24 and had his Milan contract terminated by mutual
consent in December 2025. He had been without a club since then.
Liverpool Football Club, fans, and former teammates quickly paid tribute. The club posted:
“Thank you for the memories, Divock. A true Reds legend.”
Many supporters and players highlighted his big-game mentality and humble personality. Former
manager Jürgen Klopp also sent warm congratulations.
At the international level, Origi earned 32 caps for Belgium and represented his country at the 2014 and
2018 World Cups, as well as Euro 2020.
This marks the end of a memorable career for a player who, despite never being a regular starter,
delivered unforgettable moments that cemented his place in Liverpool folklore.
