Tinubu Sticks With Shettima, Confirms VP As Running Mate for 2027
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially presented Vice President Kashim Shettima with the
certificate confirming his nomination as running mate for the 2027 presidential election on the platform
of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The formal presentation took place on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The
ceremony was attended by senior APC leaders, members of the National Working Committee, and
selected party chieftains.
Tinubu personally handed over the certificate to Shettima in a brief but symbolic event. In his remarks,
the President praised Shettima’s loyalty, dedication, and contributions to the administration’s key
programmes, particularly in the areas of economic reforms, national security, and regional
development.
“Shettima has been a reliable and competent partner. Together, we have worked to lay a foundation for
a better Nigeria,” Tinubu stated during the presentation.
Shettima expressed deep appreciation for the continued confidence reposed in him and pledged to
redouble his efforts in service to the nation if given the opportunity to serve a second term.
The formal endorsement puts to rest earlier speculation about possible changes to the APC presidential
ticket.
It signals the party’s intention to seek re-election with the same duo that contested and won in 2023.
Political analysts view the move as an effort to project stability and continuity within the ruling party
ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The certificate presentation is one of the early formal steps in the APC’s preparation for the next
electoral cycle. The party is expected to commence full-scale campaign activities and internal primaries
later in 2026.
APC chieftains described the decision as “strategic” and “unifying.” Opposition parties have so far
offered limited immediate reactions, though some described it as “expected.”
This development is expected to shape the political landscape in the coming months as other parties
intensify their own preparations for the 2027 presidential race. The formal nomination window remains
several months away.
