APM Calls On Tinubu To Suspend Umahi, Order Independent Probe
The African Peoples Movement (APM) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately suspend
Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, and constitute an independent panel to investigate alleged
irregularities in road projects under the ministry.
The group made the demand in a detailed statement issued on Thursday, July 16, 2026, signed by its
National Coordinator, Olawale Okunniyi.
The APM accused the Ministry of Works of Favouritism in the award of major contracts; significant cost variations and inflation of project sums; poor project execution and quality concerns on several federal highways; and Lack of transparency in procurement processes.
The group specifically called for the immediate suspension of Senator Dave Umahi pending the outcome
of a full investigation, the establishment of a high-level independent probe panel with clear timelines
and publication of the panel’s findings and appropriate sanctions where wrongdoing is established.
The APM described the alleged issues as “a serious threat to national development and public trust in
government infrastructure spending.”
They argued that decisive action by the President would demonstrate commitment to accountability
and protect the integrity of the administration.
This is the latest in a series of calls for greater scrutiny of federal infrastructure projects.
The Ministry of Works has been responsible for several flagship road projects under the Tinubu
administration, including rehabilitation of key highways across the country.
Critics have raised concerns about project delivery timelines and cost management, while the ministry
has defended its performance, citing challenging economic conditions and the scale of work involved.
The APM, a civil society organisation focused on good governance and transparency, has previously
issued similar calls regarding other government agencies.
The group said its latest intervention was based on reports from concerned citizens, engineers, and
project monitoring data.
Political observers note that the demand puts pressure on the Tinubu administration to demonstrate
transparency as it approaches the midpoint of its first term.
The situation remains developing, with many watching to see whether the Presidency will respond to the call for an independent probe into the Ministry of Works.
