Kwankwaso Confirms Written One-Term Pact with Obi
Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State and a prominent opposition figure, has
confirmed the existence of a written agreement with Peter Obi stipulating a one-term pact if either of
them wins the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso made the disclosure on Monday, July 20, 2026, during a live television interview. He stated
that the pact was formally documented and signed by both parties as part of broader discussions aimed
at building a united opposition front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Kwankwaso, the agreement ensures that whichever of the two emerges as president will
serve only one term, paving the way for the other to contest in 2031.
He described the arrangement as a demonstration of trust, commitment to power rotation, and a desire
to put national interest above personal ambition.
The revelation comes amid ongoing realignments within the opposition, including talks involving the
African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other platforms.
Kwankwaso emphasised that the pact was made in good faith and would be honoured by both sides.
He used the opportunity to reiterate his belief in the need for a strong coalition to challenge the APC in
2027, while praising Obi’s popularity among the youth and his focus on good governance.
The confirmation has sparked widespread discussion on social media and in political circles regarding
the dynamics of the emerging opposition alliance.
