Kemi Badenoch, Conservative MP and former leadership contender, has sharply criticised the current UK
Prime Minister, stating that he is “not the leader Britain needs at this critical time.”
Badenoch made the remarks on Monday, July 20, 2026, during a speech at a Conservative Party event in
London.
She argued that the government’s approach to the economy, immigration, national security, and public
services was failing to deliver the decisive leadership required to tackle Britain’s most pressing
challenges.
While she did not name the Prime Minister in every instance, her comments were widely interpreted as
a direct critique of the Labour leader who assumed office following the most recent general election.
Badenoch highlighted issues such as rising living costs, border control, and what she described as a lack
of long-term strategic vision.
She called on her Conservative colleagues to regroup, develop a compelling alternative vision, and
prepare for the next general election with policies focused on economic growth, stronger security, and
greater opportunity for all Britons.
The speech has been viewed by political analysts as an early indication of positioning within the
Conservative Party as it rebuilds in opposition.
Badenoch, who has remained a vocal figure on the backbenches, is often mentioned as a potential
future leadership candidate.
