Atiku Vows to Restore Fuel Subsidy and Reopen Borders If Elected in 2027
African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar on Wednesday pledged to restore the fuel subsidy, reopen Nigeria’s land borders for legitimate trade and tackle insecurity if elected president in 2027.
Atiku made the commitment during the official flag-off of his presidential campaign in Sokoto, where thousands of supporters gathered.
“I will open all the land borders for our people to do legitimate business with our brothers across the border.
We will restore subsidy back into our fuel and do everything humanly possible to bring an end to insecurity so as to ensure our people can go back to their farms,” he declared.
The former vice president said his administration would prioritise national security, economic revival and regional commerce, particularly in Northern Nigeria, where many border communities depend on cross-border trade with neighbouring countries.
He urged Nigerians to turn out massively to vote for the ADC in 2027 and to protect their votes.
“We should all come out, vote massively, protect our votes, and make sure our votes are counted and announced. We will not allow what happened in the last elections to happen anymore,” Atiku said.
He highlighted the strategic importance of Sokoto as the seat of the Caliphate and a key political centre in Northern Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region.
Atiku also commended the ADC state leadership for organising the event, alleging that elements within the ruling party had attempted to disrupt the rally.
The promises come amid ongoing debate over the economic policies of the President Bola Tinubu administration, particularly the removal of the petrol subsidy in May 2023.
Atiku has repeatedly stated his intention to restore the subsidy if elected, while proposing measures focused on supporting locally refined products.
