Atiku Vows To Support Whoever Emerges As ADC Presidential Candidate

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he will fully support and endorse whoever
emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general
elections.

Atiku made the pledge on Friday, April 3, 2026, while speaking during an interview. He emphasised unity
within the party, stating that all qualified aspirants should be allowed to contest freely in a transparent
process.
“We will support and endorse whoever emerges as the flag bearer,” Atiku said. He added that the
number of presidential aspirants in the ADC (estimated at three or four) should not be a source of
division, as the party’s primary goal is to present a strong candidate capable of winning the election.
Atiku further stated that he would readily back a younger candidate if one emerges through the party’s
democratic process, stressing his commitment to securing a better future for the younger generation.
The statement comes amid ongoing efforts to build a strong opposition coalition under the ADC
platform.

Several prominent figures, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, have aligned
with the party, raising expectations of a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress
(APC) in 2027.
Atiku, who joined the ADC after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has consistently maintained
that no aspirant should be forced to step aside.
He reiterated that the party’s national convention, scheduled for April 14, 2026, will provide the
platform for aspirants to present themselves in a free and fair contest.
