Awoniyi Wins PFA Beyond the Pitch Award for Grassroots Work
Nigerian international striker Taiwo Awoniyi has won the Beyond the Pitch Award at the 2026 Best of Africa Awards in London, in recognition of his philanthropic initiatives and contributions to grassroots football development in Nigeria.
The award, presented in partnership with the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), honours players who make meaningful contributions to society beyond their performances on the field.
Awoniyi received the honour at the ceremony held on Monday night for his commitment to supporting young talents and creating opportunities for aspiring footballers.
A major focus of his work is the Kwara Kiddies League in his home state, which he has funded and supported with kits, equipment and cash prizes.
The competition provides structured opportunities for young players across Ilorin and surrounding communities.
Awoniyi has also backed other community development, healthcare and youth empowerment initiatives through his foundation.
He attended the ceremony alongside his wife, Taiwo, his brother Victor Awoniyi, other family members, friends and members of his team. England international Michelle Agyemang won the women’s category of the same award.
Reacting to the recognition, Awoniyi posted on Instagram: “Life can give you so much, but what truly matters is what you choose to do with what you’ve been given. Grateful to receive the PFA Beyond the Pitch Award at the Best of Africa Awards 2026. To the whole team @Tawofoundation, @kwarakidsleague this is for you! Let’s keep building.”
The Best of Africa Awards, established in 2011, celebrate people of African heritage for achievements across sport, entertainment, business and other sectors, with emphasis on leadership, philanthropy and community impact. Previous football figures recognised include Alex Iwobi and Mohamed Salah.
