Gaza Situation Catastrophic and Unjustifiable – Ed Sheeran
British singer Ed Sheeran has described the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic, unjustifiable and
disproportionate” while addressing the ongoing conflict during a concert in Philadelphia.
Speaking at the start of his show at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday night, Sheeran said he had long
avoided political commentary because he wanted his music and performances to promote unity rather
than division.
“But this is a humanitarian issue and I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore,” he told the audience.
He first referred to the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023: “What happened in Israel and at the Nova
Music Festival on October 7 was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain.”
Turning to Gaza, Sheeran continued: “What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic, unjustifiable and
disproportionate. My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilians’ lives, of
children’s lives. And the systemic injustice we’re seeing unfold in the West Bank cannot be overlooked.”
The comments came after a turbulent week for his Loop Tour. Supporting act Macklemore was dropped
following pro-Palestinian remarks at an earlier show, prompting other artists to withdraw in solidarity.
Sheeran has denied responsibility for the decision, attributing it to venue owners and promoters, and
apologised to fans for “mistakes.”
“I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I’m so so sorry,” an
emotional Sheeran said.
The singer performed much of the Philadelphia concert without the usual supporting acts. His remarks
mark a rare public intervention on the conflict after years of maintaining an apolitical stance.
