Lagos To Host Africa’s First All-Electric Powerboat Championship

Lagos, Nigeria, is preparing to make history as it welcomes the E1 Series, the world’s first all-
electric powerboat championship, from October 3 to 5, 2025. This marks the first time the
competition will be held on the African continent, positioning Lagos as a global hub for
innovation, sports, and sustainable technology.

The E1 Series, often described as the “Formula 1 of the seas,” brings cutting-edge electric racing
boats, known as RaceBirds, to waterways around the world. The Lagos edition will see
international teams and drivers compete at high speeds on Lagos Lagoon, combining sport,
entertainment, and environmental advocacy.

Organizers say the event is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of Africa’s role in the global
transition to cleaner energy. By showcasing fully electric boats, the series highlights the potential
for sustainable marine transport in coastal cities like Lagos.

“This is a milestone for Africa and for Nigeria. Hosting the E1 Series shows that we are ready to
embrace innovation, sustainability, and tourism opportunities on a global scale,” said an official
from the Lagos State Government, which is collaborating with the organizers to ensure smooth
delivery of the event.

Beyond the thrills on water, the championship is expected to boost local tourism and the
economy. Hotels, transport operators, and local businesses are gearing up for an influx of
visitors, while the spotlight on Lagos could help position Nigeria as a destination for future
international sporting events.

The E1 Series has already been hosted in European and Middle Eastern cities, with Lagos now
joining the calendar as the first African venue. Sports analysts say the event could inspire new
conversations around renewable energy adoption in Africa’s maritime and transport sectors.
For fans, the three-day championship promises not only fast-paced action but also live
entertainment, cultural showcases, and environmental awareness campaigns.

As Lagos counts down to October 3, excitement is building for what promises to be a
groundbreaking event blending sport, sustainability, and African vibrancy.
