Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ Ball Set for $10m US Auction
The soccer ball used by Diego Maradona to score his infamous “Hand of God” goal against England in
the 1986 World Cup is expected to sell for $10 million at a US auction later this month.
Heritage Auctions, based in Texas, will offer the official 1986 World Cup match ball during its Summer
Platinum Night Sports Auction from August 21 to 23. Bidding opens at $2.5 million, with the auction
house estimating an eight-figure final price.
In the quarter-final match on June 22, 1986, at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, Maradona illegally punched
the ball into the net past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, a foul missed by Tunisian referee Ali
Bennaceur. Argentina won 2-1 and went on to claim the World Cup.
After the game, Maradona described the goal as scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little
with the hand of God.” Four minutes later, he scored the “Goal of the Century,” dribbling past multiple
England players.
The ball has been photo-matched to both goals. Bennaceur kept it for more than three decades and
provided a signed provenance letter in 2023 confirming it was the only ball used throughout the match,
in line with FIFA protocol at the time.
Maradona’s match-worn jersey from the same game currently holds the record for the most expensive
soccer shirt, sold for $9.3 million in 2022.
Auction specialists have described the ball as a “holy grail” for collectors and one of the most significant
football items in existence, citing the booming sports memorabilia market ahead of the 2026 World Cup
co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The auction comes amid renewed interest in the historic rivalry between Argentina and England, which
resurfaced during this year’s World Cup.
The two nations also share a long-standing political dispute over the Falkland Islands (known as the
Malvinas in Argentina).
Maradona died in November 2020 at the age of 60.
