Senegal Calls For Investigation Into Caf’s Afcon Final Verdict
The Senegalese government has called for an “independent international investigation” into alleged
corruption within the Confederation of African Football following the controversial decision to strip the
country of its Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
The demand was made on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, a day after CAF’s Appeals Board ruled that
Senegal had forfeited the 2025 AFCON final and awarded a 3–0 victory to Morocco.
The final, played on January 18, 2026, originally ended in a 1–0 extra-time win for Senegal against
Morocco in Rabat.
However, the match was marred by controversy after Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch in
protest over a late penalty decision before returning to complete the game.
CAF later ruled that the walk-off constituted a breach of its competition regulations, declaring that
Senegal had forfeited the match and the result in favour of Morocco.
Reacting to the verdict, Senegal’s government strongly condemned the decision, describing it as unjust
and calling for a full probe into CAF’s decision-making process.
Officials alleged possible corruption within the governing body and insisted that the ruling undermines the integrity of African football.
The Senegalese Football Federation has also rejected the outcome and announced plans to challenge the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), seeking to have the original result reinstated.
The controversy has sparked widespread debate across the football community, with the case now
expected to proceed to international arbitration while raising broader concerns about governance and
transparency in African football.
