Tinubu Directs Political Appointees Seeking Elective Office To Resign
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who intend
to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign their appointments on or before
March 31, 2026.
The directive was conveyed in an official circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the
Government of the Federation and signed by George Akume.
According to the statement, the decision is in line with provisions of the Electoral Act and the timetable
released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the
2027 elections.
The directive applies broadly to all categories of presidential political appointees, including ministers,
ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, and personal assistants.
It also covers directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government agencies, parastatals,
commissions, and government-owned companies.
Affected officials are required to submit their resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to
the Government of the Federation no later than the stipulated deadline.
President Tinubu stated that the measure is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws,
promoting transparency, and guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspirants participating in the
electoral process.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and
ensuring credible elections in Nigeria.
