Tinubu Vows to Fight Opponents to Finish Line in 2027
President Bola Tinubu has warned political opponents seeking to unseat him in 2027 that he will not
yield ground without a fight, declaring that all is fair in a democratic contest.
Tinubu made the remarks on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, while receiving members of the Catholic Bishops
Conference of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa.
The President stated, “Those who would take it from me will try. They will try. All is fair in politics, and
there is equal opportunity. I won’t offer them a red carpet. I won’t offer them the leash to tie me at
home. No, we will wrestle each other to the finishing point. That’s the truth. That is fair in politics.”
Tinubu also defended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against accusations of bias, insisting the electoral body is neutral and has never intimidated anyone.
He argued that opponents criticising INEC are “afraid of their own shadows and the uncertainty in the
company they keep.”
The President told the bishops that three years of difficult reforms were yielding visible dividends, citing
the uninterrupted academic calendar as one example ordinary Nigerians could feel.
He assured the clerics that his administration remains focused on delivering tangible benefits despite
the challenges.
The meeting with the Catholic Bishops Conference lasted barely an hour, with no new policy
announcements beyond the President’s remarks on political competition and governance.
