US Lawmakers Ask Trump To Prioritise Development Financing In Nigeria’s Middle Belt
United States lawmakers have urged President Donald Trump to prioritise development financing in
Nigeria’s Middle Belt as part of broader efforts to address insecurity and humanitarian challenges in the
region.
The recommendation is contained in a congressional report titled “Ending the Persecution of Christians
in Nigeria,” submitted to the White House on February 24, 2026, by members of the US House
Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Affairs.
The lawmakers called for increased investment through the US International Development Finance
Corporation (DFC), particularly targeting communities in the Middle Belt, a region that has experienced
persistent violence, displacement, and economic disruption.
According to the report, development financing is considered a critical complement to security
interventions, with legislators emphasising that economic stability can help reduce the drivers of
conflict.
The Middle Belt has faced recurring attacks linked to armed groups, banditry, and communal clashes,
contributing to humanitarian concerns and weakened local economies.
The report followed months of investigations, including hearings, expert consultations, and on-the-
ground assessments conducted by bipartisan congressional delegations to Nigeria.
Lawmakers said the findings highlight the need for a more coordinated US approach that combines
security cooperation with targeted economic support.
In addition to development financing, the legislators proposed stricter accountability measures for US
assistance to Nigeria, expanded counter-terrorism collaboration, and sanctions against individuals or
groups linked to violence.
They also recommended visa restrictions and enhanced financial monitoring to disrupt funding channels
for armed groups. While criticising aspects of Nigeria’s response to insecurity, the report acknowledged the country as a key strategic partner to the United States in Africa.
It called for a redefined bilateral relationship aimed at strengthening security, promoting economic
growth, and improving stability in affected regions.
The proposal underscores growing international attention on Nigeria’s Middle Belt and reflects a policy
shift that places greater emphasis on development-driven solutions alongside military and diplomatic
efforts.
