United States Delivers Military Equipment to Nigeria

The United States of America has delivered a consignment of military equipment to Nigerian security
forces, marking a renewed effort to bolster defence cooperation between the two countries amid
persistent security challenges, including insurgency, banditry and violent crime.
The U.S. delivery was confirmed on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, by the United States Africa Command
(AFRICOM) via its official social media channels.

According to AFRICOM, the military supplies were formally handed over to Nigerian security partners in
Abuja in support of the country’s ongoing operations against terrorism and other threats.
“U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This delivery supports
Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasizes our shared security partnership,” the command said in a
post on X (formerly Twitter).
The announcement underscores the deepening defence collaboration between Washington and Abuja,
reinforcing a long-standing relationship centred on security cooperation.

Although specific details about the types and quantity of equipment delivered were not disclosed, the
consignment is understood to be part of broader efforts to enhance Nigeria’s operational capabilities in
confronting multiple security threats.
The U.S. has been a key security partner to Nigeria for many years, providing military support through
training, intelligence sharing, logistical assistance and equipment transfers aimed at strengthening
regional stability and countering extremist groups.

The partnership includes ongoing engagement with Nigerian defence and security agencies to support
operations against Boko Haram, Islamic State-linked factions, bandits and other armed groups.
The delivery comes in the wake of intensified U.S., Nigeria cooperation on security matters, including
joint and coordinated military actions.
Notably, in late December 2025, U.S. military forces conducted airstrikes in Sokoto State targeting
Islamic State-linked militants in coordination with Nigerian forces, a move described by officials as part
of a continuing strategy to disrupt extremist networks.

Nigeria’s domestic security environment continues to face a range of overlapping challenges, including
insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest and central regions, and communal violence in
various parts of the country.
Foreign military assistance, including the recent delivery of equipment, is seen by analysts as
complementary to Nigeria’s sovereign efforts to address these threats, rather than a replacement for
national security initiatives.

While the current delivery was described as critical to current operations, the United States and Nigeria
have also engaged in high-level defence dialogues and strategic planning aimed at enhancing
interoperability, capacity building and long-term security outcomes.

The continued partnership reflects shared interests in stabilising West Africa and preventing the
expansion of violent extremist groups that could further destabilise the region.
