On This Day: Afrobeat Legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti Dies at 58

Nigerian musician, composer, and political activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti died at his home in Lagos on
August 2, 1997, at the age of 58.
His older brother, Dr. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, announced the news at a press conference the following
day, stating that the immediate cause was heart failure, with complications arising from AIDS.
Fela, born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti on October 15, 1938, in Abeokuta, pioneered
Afrobeat, a fusion of traditional Yoruba music, jazz, funk, and highlife.

He used his music as a platform for sharp political criticism against military dictatorships, corruption,
and Western imperialism in Nigeria and across Africa.
His compound in Lagos, known as the Kalakuta Republic, became a hub for artistic and political
expression, often drawing the ire of authorities.
Throughout his career, Fela faced repeated arrests, beatings, and harassment. A notorious 1977 military
raid on his commune resulted in severe injuries to residents, the death of his mother Funmilayo
Ransome-Kuti the following year, and his brief exile.
He changed his middle name from Ransome to Anikulapo (“he who carries death in his pouch”) in 1978,
symbolising defiance.

Despite these challenges, he released dozens of influential albums and performed globally, inspiring
generations with songs like “Zombie,” “Coffin for Head of State,” and “International Thief Thief.”
Fela’s death came after weeks of illness. He was survived by his children, including musicians Femi and
Seun Kuti, who have continued his musical legacy.
His funeral in Lagos drew massive crowds, reflecting his enduring popularity as Africa’s most iconic
musical dissident.
Fela’s influence on music and activism continues to be celebrated worldwide.
