Don’t Shun Politics, Ex-Minister Urges Nigerian Youths

Dr. Tanko Sununu, former Minister of State for Education, has strongly urged Nigerian youths not to
distance themselves from politics but to actively participate in shaping the country’s future.
Sununu made the call on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, while delivering a keynote address at a youth
leadership summit organised by a coalition of student bodies and youth groups in Abuja.

He warned that the continued disengagement of young people from the political process would only
perpetuate the dominance of older politicians and limit the injection of fresh ideas, innovation, and
energy needed to tackle Nigeria’s challenges.
“Don’t shun politics. Get involved. The destiny of this country is in your hands,” Sununu told the
gathering of over 500 young leaders, students, and emerging politicians.
He called for deliberate policies to increase youth representation in elective and appointive positions at
local, state, and federal levels. Sununu advocated for stronger civic education in secondary schools and
universities to prepare young Nigerians for leadership roles.
He urged youths to hold political leaders accountable while also preparing themselves to take up
leadership responsibilities. The former minister criticised the culture of political apathy among many
young people, describing it as a disservice to the nation.
He cited examples of young leaders who have made significant impacts in other countries and
encouraged Nigerian youths to emulate such models rather than remaining spectators in the political
arena.

The summit, themed “Youths as Architects of Nigeria’s Future,” also featured panel discussions on good
governance, economic empowerment, and digital innovation in politics.
Several other speakers, including youth activists and representatives of political parties, reinforced
Sununu’s message.
The call comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to intensify.
Many youth groups have expressed frustration over limited opportunities for young people in major
parties, while others have begun forming alliances and registering for future contests.

The event ended with a commitment by participants to establish a national youth political network
aimed at promoting good governance, youth representation, and active citizenship.
Sununu’s message is expected to spark further discussions on youth involvement in Nigerian politics in
the coming months.
