Iraq and US Sign 48 Agreements During Al-Sudani’s Official Visit
Iraq and the United States have signed 48 bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding during the official visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani to Washington, D.C.
The agreements were formalised on Friday, July 17, 2026, covering a broad spectrum of cooperation in
energy, security, trade, education, health, agriculture, infrastructure, and reconstruction.
Energy and Oil Sector: Several pacts aimed at modernising Iraq’s oil and gas infrastructure, increasing
production capacity, improving power generation, and enhancing energy sector governance.
** Security and Defence Cooperation: Agreements focused on counter-terrorism, military training,
intelligence sharing, and long-term strategic security partnership.
** Economic and Trade Relations: Deals designed to boost bilateral trade, protect investments,
facilitate private sector partnerships, and support Iraq’s economic diversification efforts.
** Education and Human Development: Memoranda of understanding on academic exchanges,
capacity building, scholarship programmes, and collaboration in higher education.
** Health and Medical Cooperation: Pacts to strengthen Iraq’s healthcare system, improve medical
training, and facilitate knowledge and technology transfer.
** Infrastructure and Reconstruction: Agreements supporting major reconstruction projects,
transportation networks, water management, and urban development.
Prime Minister al-Sudani described the visit as “historic” and a new chapter in Iraq-US relations. He
highlighted that the agreements would contribute to Iraq’s reconstruction, economic stability, and long-
term development goals.
US officials, including senior members of the Trump administration, welcomed the outcome as evidence
of a deepening strategic partnership between the two countries.
The signing ceremony took place during high-level bilateral meetings at the White House and other
government venues in Washington.
The agreements are expected to strengthen economic ties and support Iraq’s post-conflict recovery and
development efforts. Both sides expressed commitment to swift execution where possible.
This marks one of the most comprehensive sets of bilateral agreements signed between Iraq and the United States in recent years.
