Isaac Fayose Hails Obi as ‘Incoming President’
Isaac Fayose, younger brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and a prominent PDP
chieftain has described Peter Obi as the “incoming president” of Nigeria, just days after publicly
criticising him.
Fayose made the remarks on Friday, July 17, 2026, during a live television interview. The sudden shift in
tone has drawn significant attention, given his earlier comments criticising Obi’s political strategy and
the Labour Party’s approach to opposition politics.
In the interview, Fayose stated: “Peter Obi is the incoming president. The people are with him.”
He praised Obi’s strong grassroots support, particularly among the youth, and acknowledged the former
Anambra State Governor’s perceived integrity and connection with ordinary Nigerians.
However, Fayose stopped short of formally endorsing Obi or announcing any defection from the PDP.
His comments come amid ongoing realignments in Nigeria’s opposition political space ahead of the 2027
general elections.
Several politicians and groups are exploring broader coalitions to challenge the ruling All Progressives
Congress (APC).
Earlier in the week, Isaac Fayose had criticised Obi, questioning aspects of his political movement and
suggesting that the Labour Party needed to adopt a more pragmatic approach.
The rapid change in his rhetoric has sparked speculation about possible behind-the-scenes political
calculations or efforts to position himself within emerging opposition alliances.
Fayose is known for his outspoken and sometimes unpredictable style in Nigerian politics. His brother,
Ayodele Fayose, remains a major political figure in Ekiti State and has also been vocal on national issues.
The statement has generated mixed reactions.
Supporters of Peter Obi welcomed the comments as recognition of Obi’s growing influence.
Some PDP loyalists expressed disappointment, viewing it as undermining party unity.
Political analysts see it as part of the fluid realignments occurring across opposition parties, including the
African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other platforms.
The Labour Party has remained silent on the matter.
This episode highlights the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of Nigerian politics as various actors
position themselves for the 2027 presidential race.
