National Cancer Prevention: Why Early Action Matters

Every year, millions lose their battle to cancer. But many of these deaths are preventable.

What is Cancer?
Cancer is when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably, invading healthy tissues and organs. Cancer is a major public health challenge.

So, why does prevention matter?

Why Prevention Matters Now.
Globally, cancer causes millions of deaths annually. In Nigeria, over 120,000 new cases are reported each year, with 78,000 deaths in 2020 alone. Prevention strategies like lifestyle changes and screening programs can significantly reduce these numbers.

Research shows prevention and early detection have a huge impact. A study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that for five major cancers, prevention and screening saved more lives than treatment advances over 45 years. The WHO says 30-50% of cancer deaths are preventable by avoiding risk factors and adopting healthy habits.

What You Can Do.
Cancer prevention starts with daily choices:
– Quit tobacco – it’s the top avoidable cause of cancer deaths
– Stay active – walking 7,000 steps a day lowers cancer risk
– Eat balanced, limit processed foods
– Limit alcohol
– Get screened (mammograms, Pap smears, etc.)
– Get necessary vaccinations like HPV and Hepatitis B.

A Call to Action.
Prof. Aliyu of NICRAT emphasizes, “Cancer is not a death sentence. Early detection and treatment save lives.”
As cases rise, let’s individually and collectively prioritize prevention.
