President Tinubu Honors Nigeria’s Armed Forces
Nigeria paused on Thursday to honour its military heroes as the nation observed Armed Forces
Remembrance and Celebration Day, a day dedicated to remembering fallen service personnel and
celebrating the courage and dedication of those currently serving.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a message marking the occasion, paid tribute to the sacrifices of the
Nigerian Armed Forces and reaffirmed his commitment to their welfare and dignity.
In a statement issued for the annual observance, Tinubu acknowledged the profound sacrifices made by
members of the armed forces who have laid down their lives defending Nigeria’s unity and security.
“We remember the brave men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces who sacrificed everything for
our country. Their names might not always be remembered, but their courage sustains our freedom and
peace. A nation that forgets its fallen heroes loses its direction; Nigeria, however, remembers,” the
President said.
Tinubu also extended heartfelt condolences to the families of fallen soldiers, including widows, children
and loved ones, recognising the deep personal loss they bear. “Your loss is profound, and no words can
replace the sacrifices of your loved ones. They served Nigeria with honour, and our people will never
forget their sacrifices,” he added.
Beyond remembering the fallen, the President paid tribute to Nigeria’s serving personnel across land,
sea and air, commending their discipline, courage and professionalism, often demonstrated far from
home in challenging circumstances.
He reaffirmed his role as **President and Commander-in-Chief, pledging continued support for the
armed forces’ welfare, operational needs and dignity. “A secure Nigeria stands firmly behind those who
defend it. We will continue to support them in action,” Tinubu emphasised.
The President’s message concluded with prayers for peace and strength: “May our fallen heroes rest in
peace. May God strengthen our Armed Forces. May God bless Nigeria.”
The day’s formal activities, inclding wreath-laying ceremonies at he National Arcade in Abuja, were led
by Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing the President, alongside Senate President Godswill
Akpabio, service chiefs, senior government officials and diplomatic representatives.
Armed Forces Remembrance and Celebration Day, formerly known simply as Armed Forces
Remembrance Day, was formally renamed to honour both fallen and serving members of Nigeria’s
military, reflecting dual objectives of remembrance and celebration.
The annual observance honours those who died defending Nigeria, in both internal and external
operations, and underscores the enduring contributions of troops to national stability and peace.
