Southampton Expelled From Championship Play-Offs For Spying

Southampton have been expelled from the Championship play-off final following a disciplinary hearing
into allegations of spying on opponents’ training sessions.
The English Football League (EFL) confirmed the decision on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, after an
independent disciplinary commission found Southampton guilty of multiple breaches of EFL regulations.
The club admitted to unauthorised filming and observation of training sessions of Middlesbrough,
Oxford United, and Ipswich Town in the build-up to their respective matches.

As a result of the expulsion, Middlesbrough (whom Southampton beat 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-
final) have been reinstated and will face Hull City in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium. Southampton
have also been handed a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 Championship season. The club plans to
appeal the decision.
The controversy, widely dubbed “Spygate”, erupted when Middlesbrough complained that a
Southampton staff member (later identified as an analyst) was caught filming their training session
ahead of the first leg of the semi-final.

Further investigations revealed a pattern of similar behaviour against other clubs.
Middlesbrough had strongly demanded Southampton’s expulsion from the final, describing it as “the
only appropriate response” to protect the integrity of the competition.
The EFL charged Southampton with misconduct, and the independent commission’s hearing concluded
rapidly.
Middlesbrough welcomed the decision as a victory for sporting integrity. Southampton have expressed
disappointment and indicated they will explore all avenues of appeal. The EFL emphasised that the
sanctions were necessary to uphold the rules and maintain fairness in the competition.

The expulsion means Hull City will now play Middlesbrough in the final originally scheduled for May 23,
2026, though a new date may be confirmed depending on logistical arrangements.
This is one of the most significant disciplinary actions in recent EFL history and has dominated football
headlines across England.
