FIFA Dashes Super Eagles’ World Cup Hope, Confirms DR Congo In Play-Off

Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been effectively ended after FIFA
confirmed the final lineup for the inter-confederation play-off tournament, excluding the Super Eagles
and naming the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) as Africa’s representative.
The confirmation was made on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, as FIFA released details of the six-team
tournament that will determine the final two qualification spots for the World Cup to be hosted by the
United States, Canada, and Mexico.

According to FIFA, the play-off tournament will feature Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia,
and Suriname. The matches are scheduled to begin on March 26, 2026.
DR Congo’s inclusion confirms that Nigeria will not participate, despite a formal protest filed by the
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) challenging the outcome of their earlier play-off encounter.
Nigeria had lost the decisive CAF play-off final to DR Congo in November 2025 after a 1–1 draw,
eventually falling 4–3 on penalties.

Following the defeat, the NFF petitioned FIFA, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during
the match and seeking to have the result overturned.
However, FIFA’s latest announcement, which lists DR Congo among qualified teams without any
amendment, indicates that the protest did not alter the outcome, effectively ending Nigeria’s
qualification campaign.

The inter-confederation play-off tournament will determine the final two teams to join the expanded
48-nation FIFA World Cup, marking the first edition of the tournament under the new format.
The development means the Super Eagles will miss out on the World Cup for a second consecutive
edition, extending their absence from the global tournament until at least 2030.
