NCDC Identifies Two Suspected Ebola Cases in North-East Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has identified two suspected cases of Ebola disease in the North-East region of the country.

In an update issued on Saturday, the agency stated that both individuals have been isolated.

Contact identification and listing are ongoing, and laboratory testing is being conducted to determine whether the cases are confirmed infections.

“Two suspected cases of Ebola disease have been identified in Nigeria’s North-East region. Both individuals have been isolated, contact identification and listing is ongoing, and laboratory testing is being conducted,” the NCDC said in a statement posted on its official X handle.

The agency cautioned the public against treating the cases as confirmed. “Being classified as suspected cases does not mean they are confirmed Ebola cases; confirmation is subject to laboratory results,” it added.

The NCDC urged Nigerians to maintain good hand hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation and follow guidance from public health authorities.

It promised further updates as verified information becomes available.

The development comes amid heightened surveillance following Nigeria’s confirmation of an imported Ebola case on 20 October 2026.

A 42-year-old Swiss woman who had travelled from Uganda tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of the virus in Abuja.

She and her husband, a close contact, were later medically evacuated to Switzerland.

Health authorities have been monitoring contacts linked to the earlier case.

The NCDC has not disclosed the specific states within the North-East where the new suspected cases were identified, nor any travel histories or possible links to the previous case.
