U.S. Senators Accuse Attorney General of Politicising Justice

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi faced intense criticism from Democratic senators during a
Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, where she was accused of transforming the
Department of Justice (DOJ) into a tool for political retribution. The senators claim she’s
targeting President Trump’s perceived enemies under the guise of law enforcement.

Senator Dick Durbin sharply condemned the direction of the DOJ under Bondi, saying, “What
has taken place since January 20, 2025 would make even President Nixon recoil.” Durbin
accused Bondi of allowing the DOJ to become “a shield for the president and his political allies
when they engage in misconduct.”

Bondi defended her actions, arguing that she is focused on restoring faith in the Justice
Department. She said her administration is committed to focusing on serious crime while ending
what she described as the “weaponization of justice” that she claims marked the previous
administration’s practices.
The senators pointed to several high-profile cases adding fuel to concerns over politicization:
* James Comey, former FBI director, indicted for allegedly lying to Congress.
* Investigations into New York Attorney General Letitia James, Senator Adam Schiff, and
former national security advisor John Bolton — all known critics of Trump.
* Issues related to the handling of Jeffrey Epstein files and a bribery probe involving
former border czar Tom Homan.

The hearing underscored deep partisan divisions over the DOJ’s independence and whether it is
being used to settle political scores. While Bondi insists her team is returning to core law
enforcement priorities, critics worry that proceedings against opponents of the former
administration may blur the line between justice and political vendetta.
It remains to be seen how these allegations will affect ongoing cases or the public’s perception of
the DOJ. Bondi’s responses suggest she is defending the administration’s course, but calls for
transparency and oversight have grown louder.
